In Switzerland, all employees must be compulsorily insured against occupational accidents (OI) by their employer. From at least 8 working hours per week, insurance against non-occupational accidents (NBU) is also mandatory. NBU covers accidents that occur during free time.
If an employment relationship is terminated or the workload is reduced to less than 8 hours, the NBU does not apply. The NBU coverage must then be taken out by the employer as a supplement to the health insurance or - in a transitional phase of up to six months - in the form of an indemnity insurance.
An indemnity insurance extends the existing UVG from the former employer. It is paid by the former employee himself. The purpose is that an employee who soon starts a new job with UVG coverage does not have to change the insurance twice. The employer is obliged by law to inform the employee about the possibility of the indemnity insurance.
